The first thing to consider is that the Universal Firearms Handling Rules are not just range rules. They are for all places and all times, even in the middle of a gunfight. The reason for this is that they are principle based. For example: “Never point your gun at anything you are not willing to shoot.” What follows from that is you can and perhaps should point your gun at things you are willing to shoot. When it is good and appropriate, you should point your gun at people.
There are various other rules out there such as “ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.” I don’t necessarily have a problem with this rule. It is just a truism and seems silly to even talk about. If all of my guns are ready to use, then I guess I’ll keep all of my guns loaded. The assumption I am making here is that I also always keep my guns secure (i.e. inaccessible to unauthorized access).
